Most Awesome Lady Heroes - Věra Chytilová
Why I love her: Honestly, if you are interested in film and if you have at some point taken a couple of film studies classes or read a book on film, you will have either heard about or seen Věra Chytilová’s film Daisies. And considering that’s a film directed by a woman in the 60s (!) from a country like the Czech Republic which tends to be considered inconsequential, that’s a pretty big deal. Daisies is a weird ass movie but it’s also really funny, full of wonder and with some amazing scenes and details that I have yet to see rivaled in other movies since. Also, both short films she made while at film school in Prague had theatrical releases right after she graduated and I don’t know how many filmmakers can say that about themselves. Of course she also directed a whole bunch more movies all of whom are well worth checking out.
Věra Chytilová is a super cool lady, a pioneering filmmaker in a notoriously male oriented field and thus is well deserving of a spot on this list.
